Derry Girls: 90s Nostalgia

Derry Girls was one of the most entertaining lockdown-watches for me or better still one of the most entertaining ever, purely because of the musical journey it takes you down. It’s about a bunch of teenagers in Derry, Northern Ireland in the 1990s. The show is funny and irreverent, coming from the adolescents’ perspective, who are navigating their confusing growing up years with the troubles making for a unique backdrop. They make mistakes, get into lots of trouble but have a whole lot of adventures in the process.

Lending drama to these adventures, is Derry Girls’ superb soundtrack, which is almost exclusively made up of the hits of the 1990s. There’s Jimmy Ray, Ace of Base, Whigfield, Two Unlimited, Take That, Cranberries, Snow among others. For anyone, like me, who grew up to this music, this is the stuff nostalgia is made of. The world of entertainment had just exploded onto Indian TV screens in the 1990s, exposing teenagers like me to the wonders of MTV and Channel V. To that extent, it was a particular special reminder to me.

Even without that though, I think Derry Girls is one to watch. I didn’t think watching teenage girls’ escapades was up my alley, but it was sure quite a ride. It’s light-hearted fun worth binge-watching on a lazy Sunday.
