A look at the latest numbers on India's telecom sector indicates that while there is consistent (even if slow) progress in increasing reach across India, wide state wise differences persist. India's overall teledensity, as measured by the number of telephone connections per hundred people is at 73.5. In other words, for every 100 people in the country, 73-74 have a telephone connection. Some states are very well connected, with a teledensity of over 100 or where each person has over one telephone connection. These include Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. However, at the other end of the spectrum are states like Bihar and Assam where teledensity is less than 50, indicating that there is 1 connection between 2 people or more.
Infrastructure, being an important must have for growth and development of the economy, has been a point of focus and will continue to remain so in the coming years as well. Physical infrastructure creation like transport systems, electricity, water supply and telecom are of prime significance and determine the overall quality of living and also determine the potential for development.
